In London today, finding Mexican food on-the-go is easy!!!

Burritos is one of the most popular option among many others. But what are burritos and where they come from?
.

photo-4Traditionally, a burrito is a flour tortilla rolled with rice, beans and meat inside. The word “burrito” Spanish meaning is little donkey. Some say that burritos look like donkey ears or the packs they carry, thus adding to the meaning of the name.

Food options in London are plentiful. More and more burritos places are opening in London these days and no one can deny that burritos are among the most popular choices in Mexican cuisine … Big time!
.

There are plenty of reasons behind the success of burritos in London: some great people dedicated to prepare them with fresh ingredients and authentic Mexican flavours, they are inexpensive, unpretentious and usually social.

Hitting the London arena once more, I visited “El Burrito” in Charlot Street W1T 1SF (part of Mestizo Restaurant), and spoke to Andres Jimenez, the manager, who shared with me some tails about the origin of burritos and from what I heard, this is my favourite one:

DSC02677NEW“Mexican popular tradition tells the story of a man named Juan Mendez who used to sell tacos in a street stand, using a donkey as a transport for himself and the food, during the Mexican Revolution period (1910-1921) in the Bella Vista neighbourhood in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. To keep the food warm, Juan had the idea of wrapping the food placed in a large homemade flour tortilla inside individual napkins. He had a lot of success, and consumers came from other places around the Mexican border looking for the “food of the Burrito,” the word they eventually adopted as the name for these large tacos.”

I had a wicked time with Andres and his kitchen team. We exchange ideas and recipes using KANKUN® SAUCE on the burritos and some tacos.
