Though we must now use the past tense when speaking of the charismatic and Colombian Nobel Prize–winning writer Gabriel García Márquez, who died Thursday at age 87, the more than 50 million copies of his books, published in nearly 40 different languages, mean that his work will live forever.
Garcia Marquez’s death represents the passing of one of the world’s greatest living authors, and the loss of a powerful public intellectual whose opinions on Cuba, military dictatorship and Latin American cultural autonomy made front-page news.
One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera are one of the key books of my entire life. I am so proud that Garcia Marquez the famous writer, had chosen Mexico as his home residence for decades.
RIP Gabriel Garcia Marquez. We will miss you but you have left an unforgettable legacy!!!
