Brits love a sandwich. So much so that surveys have shown cheese, ham and chicken sandwiches to be the nation’s three favourite lunch options. But did you know that sandwiches are also popular in Mexico?
Sandwiches, called TORTAS, are a favourite lunch choice all over the country, but they are not quite sandwiches as we know them. Tortas are generally made with a white bun, that is toasted, spread with a layer of bean paste and a layer of mayonnaise before all sorts of fillings are added, like ham and cheese, breaded chicken or pulled pork. In true Mexican style, there is also the option to spice them up with rings of jalapeño chillies or a drop or three of hot sauce.
Just one bite of a torta can transport Rolando back to his college days in Mexico when he would arrive home to a freshly made, warm and succulent Mexican sandwich prepared for him by his mum. There was nothing quite like a homemade torta to appease his teenage hunger. For Rolando and many other Mexicans, tortas are the most perfect comfort food and a great midday option. Lucky then that you can find them everywhere in Mexico, there are even people who ride around on bicycles selling tortas door to door!
