As a boy, I  spent sleepy afternoons in Mexico City looking through my stash of lucha magazines with my brothers. We admired our favourite wrestlers and tried out their moves.  One of my favourites was El Santo, one of my real-life superhero.

We would pretend to be the wrestlers, putting on our capes, sewn out of shiny old dresses, and our glimmering masks. But before we started wrapping our feet around each others’ necks and hurling ourselves sideways in a spinning manoeuvre, we had to do the most important part of the pre-battle ritual. We brothers would tiptoe into the kitchen and find our grandma’s freshly made chilli chipotle sauce in a glass jar.

We’d each scoop a spoonful of the red sauce and slam the spicy potion down our throats. The buzz of it always made us let out a ripping roar: “Liberate your luchador”
